When You Were Young lyrics
You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now ... here he comes!
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when you were young
Can we climb this mountain
I don't know
Higher now than ever before
I know we can make it if we take it slow
Let's take it easy
Easy now, watch it go
We're burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
When you were young
And sometimes you close your eyes
and see the place where you used to live
When you were young
They say the devil's water, it ain't so sweet
You don't have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while
You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now here he comes
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when you were young
(He talks like a gentlemen, like you imagined when)
When you were young
I said he doesn't look a thing like Jesus
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But more than you'll ever know
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now ... here he comes!
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when you were young
Can we climb this mountain
I don't know
Higher now than ever before
I know we can make it if we take it slow
Let's take it easy
Easy now, watch it go
We're burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
When you were young
And sometimes you close your eyes
and see the place where you used to live
When you were young
They say the devil's water, it ain't so sweet
You don't have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while
You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now here he comes
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when you were young
(He talks like a gentlemen, like you imagined when)
When you were young
I said he doesn't look a thing like Jesus
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But more than you'll ever know

So she trusts a man that is no good, and puts up with his BS because she wants the type of love she saw when she was a child possibly with her parents. She's addicted to hope. |

KoalaSmiles wrote on 8th Jun 2012, 9:35h: I love this song because it has good beats and meaning behind it. My interpretation for this song is finding a person who you love/someone who loves you that is opposite to what you imagined would be when you were young. In other words, someone who loves you and will stick with you even though he isn't the perfect guy you imagined to be who was the only one for you. That's why the phrase "he doesn't look anything like Jesus" means that he isn't someone who looks perfect or beautiful "but he talks like a gentleman like when you imagined when you were young" although not absolutely perfect, this partner treats you the way you wanted someone to. And how "you can climb this mountain..... but we can take it slow" because of the realism and imperfection of this partner, the relationship isn't so easy all the time and there are some issues and problems. But with "taking it slow" it shows the possibil ity of succeeding in this relationship, though slow and sometimes difficult. And the bit where it involves drinking the devils water and its being reputed not to be so sweet, symbolizes love and its pain. And dipping your foot in the devils water symbolizes how one can feel in love for a little while although dangerous and painful. this song reminds me of a relationship that I had; having the partner who was the closest to perfect that I imagined when I was young :) |

Tara DiGio wrote on 2nd Aug 2011, 0:05h: I think the song is saying that Prince Charming isn't going to satisfy you. If we aren't fulfilled by Jesus, the one who has supposedly saved us from our sins, then how could an ordinary human guy that happens to be good-looking save you? If the Bible is true, I think the song is saying that the potential Prince Charming you are waiting for isn't going to satisfy you because he needs Jesus' love and forgiveness as much as you do...we all do. |
