Marilyn Manson

Marilyn Manson is an alternative metal band based in Los Angeles, California, in the United States. Frequently termed "shock rock", the group's sound contains influences from heavy metal, industrial music, and glam. As a whole, Marilyn Manson is highly difficult to categorize as each album has a distinct and individual image and sound. Formed in 1989 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida as Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, the band's uniquely theatrical performances gathered a local cult following that has, over seventeen years, developed into a worldwide fanbase.

Seldom have I seen an artist (band) that is so narcissistic. While attending Graspop Metal Meeting 2009, I had the opportunity to see Marilyn Manson perform live. I used to like Marilyn Manson and listen to his music quite often, so my expectations were
fairly high. Even more because of the fact that Marilyn Manson was the closing act of GMM 2009.

Marilyn Manson kicked off his setlist with some strong songs, but towards the middle and end of the show, he decided to play some mellow ones. This is not
a good combination with thousands of drunken metalheads. It was striking how Marilyn Manson constantly kicked over his microphone stand and even smashed his mic two times on the ground. Some crew members of him constantly put the microphone stand upwards
again. This was funny, but it also looked quite arrogant, as was the costume changing/getting his makeup done after every song. But this is probably a part of is act - I don't know, this was my first time seeing him live.

Fortunately - there were also
quite a few faster songs, such as the Beautiful People, Sweet Dreams, the Dope Show, Disposable Teens, etc. There were also some nice prop-action involved; such as when Manson showed up on stage in a vacuum plastic box. Towards the middle of the song he
crawled out of it. Rather interesting to look at.

The contact with the audience was poor. His only two lines were 'Oh it's Belgium isn't it" and "According to my statistics, your country is the biggest producer of drugs." (twice, after the audience
responded weakly). An encore was expected, but nothing came. The band left the stage without saying goodbye, leaving the majority of the crowd disappointed.

See Marilyn Manson live again? Maybe at a festival, but I surely wouldn't buy tickets again.

I really like Marilyn Manson. So does my daughter, he is not that bad. Just get past the looks they don't mean that much. Listen to what you can not hear.

I'm with J-Force, and to some extent, Aiken on this one. I'm not too keen on his music (I can listen to it and even rock to it but I prefer other stuff) but this guy's image is amazing, I'm well jealous. He seems to be taking on the US moral majority
(that are really a minority, it's all marketing) and, for my money, winning. I have a lot of respect for Marilyn Manson, I'm glad he exists.

I also saw him in a documentary once and was surprised how well-spoken and intelligent Marilyn Manson actually is. Behind the shockrock exterior is a man with a good heart and mind.
I wouldn't want his wardrobe, though.

Well, girls, I have to disagree with you. I think Marilyn Manson is a great musician and performer, who chooses his own way.

Of course, he looks a bit strange and he doesn't think and behave in the ordinary, common ways, but I've seen some
documentaries and movies about Marilyn Manson, the band and his life, and I can honestly say there's nothing evil about him.

Au contraire; he's a great pacifist.

Besides - that, I like almost almost all his music, but Mechanical Animals is my
favorite.

I agree with Jenny.
But his voice is so awsome. I love it.
I just wish that he used it for something better than what he does.

Marilyn Manson… Well, I’ll say that his yet to be sold perfume sounds creepier than his music. I have not seen a full-length music video from him, only clips of them, in which he created interesting visuals; although, I’m not too fond of the content
he likes to display. I do like his voice and have a fondness for a few of his songs, but I still think Marilyn Manson is a strange, strange man. And I emphasize the word “strange” greatly.

Much love,
Jenny Valentine

I quite like the band and a number of songs. I love the different looks, especially the glam(ish) period of Mechanical Animals and I think the newer, pinstripe adorned gentleman that Marilyn himself has become is partly an influence of Dita and the
burlesque period in general. I love the concept of the videos and think they are very interesting visually, but don't agree with some of the content.
