It wasn't really like that in 1980 when I was lucky enough to see them at the Ajanta Theatre in Derby, everyone had heard of them but few people were really "into" them. It wasn't until after the death of Ian Curtis (exactly a month after I'd seen them live) that everyone realised what a truly marvellous band they were and the bandwagon jumping began. After the death of Ian Curtis, the rest of the band assumed the name New Order (you've probably heard the track Blue Monday) but without Curtis they lost some of their soul. New Order made it bigger than Joy Division ever had but I'm afraid that without Curtis the music just didn't talk to me anymore. The album Unknown Pleasures was released 27 years ago and has been on my playlist ever since. I'm sure I'll still be playing it in another 27 years if I'm still around. |
