Well, that comparison usually bothers me.. I have quite some knowledge as far as underground music is concerned and gothic and emo have nothing in common, except for perhaps same themes.
Gothic and emo are usually connected to self mutilation/cutting yourself, but it has nothing to do with the actual music, or as some like to refer to it, the lifestyle. Cutting yourself usually involves deeper emotional or psychological problems and, in my opinion, has nothing to do with the type of music you listen to.
Technically, gothic and emo are nothing alike either. Gothic is a music style which arose in the early 80's, as a variety to gothic rock (note how these two seem to be the same, but are not!), a sub genre of postpunk. There are various types such as lolita and victorian gothic as far as dressing is concerned. Typical gothic bands are for instance Bauhaus and the aforementioned Siouxsie Sioux.
Emo is a relatively newer form which arose in the 90's, combining metalcore with emotional overtones, by which it is quite noticable to say that metalcore already is a mix of hardcore and metal. In emo music the vocalists switch between clean, usually high-pitched vocals and screams (not grunts). Gothic music is usually melancholic, the bands in fact try to create a melancholic atmosphere.
Note how gothic usually has nothing to do with satanist, in fact: most of them are atheist or agnost.

Is Gothic the same as Emo?
You know, my friend brought something to my attention. Emo kids only talk about cutting. Goth kids actually do it and don't tell anyone...
That was pointless, yes, but...
Jenny, I agree with your post.
Sweet lies and lullabies,
